Morty & Bob’s… a cornucopia of good food

The biggest question I had last week was whether I’d be able to find my way to Morty & Bob’s at Coal Drops Yard in King’s Cross in time to make my table?

The short answer is, no.

I was 15 minutes late. I’m not known for my sense of direction but I find this part of town rather confusing to navigate.

King’s Cross is unrecognisable in terms of development of the land mass, while everywhere looks the same.

Is it just me that thinks like this?

I finally reached Coal Drops Yard and all the fantastic street food vendors and craft stalls were empty. Such a shame.

The splash park was full, however, with mums and pre-schoolers making the most of the good weather and keeping cool.

I got the impression that Morty & Bob’s has styled itself on a modern New York-style deli.

I enjoyed the bavette steak sandwich with chimichurri and particularly enjoyed the focaccia bun, which made a real change from the ubiquitous brioche that’s hard to avoid these days.

Gluten-free chocolate brownie with mixed berry coulis was a pleasant surprise – not the usual dry texture I expect from such a dish.

It was just as rich and moist as any brownie should be.

The staff were lovely, particularly the manager.

He mentioned that the grilled cheese sandwich is its signature dish but I didn’t fancy it.

Coal Drops Yard is a cornucopia of good food, so turn up, walk around and then take a chance that you’ll be able to grab a table.
