Women’s football round-up: Millwall Lionesses finally win Championship game while Charlton suffer promotion setback at Aston Villa

A brace from Evie Clarke inspired Millwall Lionesses to their first victory of the season in the FA Women’s Championship.

Clarke scored a contender for goal of the season to help her side to a 3-1 win over her former club, London Bees, on Wednesday night.

The visitors struck early after Millwall failed to clear a cross, with Daisy McLachlan rifling a shot into the top corner.

Although the Bees enjoyed more possession, they failed to work Rhiannon Stewart regularly and were made to pay for not making the most of their dominance when Annie Rossiter picked Taylor O’Leary’s pocket just outside the area and unleashed a powerful drive past former Lioness Sarah Quantrill.

Millwall took the lead on the counter-attack when Clarke beat the offside trap and slotted home under Quantrill before doubling her tally with a sensational overhead kick.

Lionesses manager Chris Phillips said: “I told the girls that on 20 minutes three of them were in danger of coming off – and that’s because I could only make three subs!

“But credit to the girls in the second part of the second half, they picked themselves up, they fought and got themselves back in the game.

“It was one of the best 45 minutes I’ve seen us play this season.”

Charlton Women’s promtions hopes were dealt a blow as they lost 2-0 at Aston Villa on Wednesday.

The hosts played the final 20 minutes with 10 players after Kerri Walsh, who also scored, was sent off for kicking out at Harley Bennett.

Liz Ejupi’s effort was cleared off the line by Elisha N’Dow.

Charlton boss Riteesh Mishra said: “It’s a big blow for us. In the first half, on reflection, we may have set up in the wrong way or shape to actually go and try to win the game. We were always playing catch-up.
