Swansea boss Michael Duff: Millwall player should have been sent off

Swansea City head coach Michael Duff felt Millwall’s Jake Cooper should have seen red for the foul which led to their opening goal in yesterday’s 3-0 win at The Den.

Jamal Lowe converted from the penalty spot after the centre-back pulled back Jerry Yates inside the box.

Matt Grimes and Mykola Kukharevych added second-half goals to make it a miserable afternoon for the South Londoners, a sizeable chunk of the home support leaving comfortably well before the end of the Championship match.

Asked if it was the Swans’ best performance since he took charge before the start of this season, Duff said: “Probably – 3-0, away from home and a difficult place.

“We saw a bit more of what we want it to look like. There was some really good football. The first goal is 40-plus passes in the build-up to the penalty which I think it should’ve been a red card as well.

“The second goal is 20-25 passes in the build up.

“The difference between the QPR game and today is that we had to ride it out, survive and defend the box. They put you under pressure and we knew they would have a reaction after half-time. They showed their intent from the kick off – that the big centre-half, six foot six, goes up for the first centre.

“We had to change shape. The good thing is we survived it and came back out of it. You’re not going to dominate a game for 90 minutes, not in the Championship – or very rarely anyway. We had to do both sides of it and the shape and organisation were good. Some of the football was good.

“We are still a long, long way from where we want to get to but there has been a reaction from the Cardiff game, when we let everyone down associated with the football club. The reaction has been really, really good. It probably should’ve been three clean sheets and nine points.”
