Millwall boss gives his response to Swansea boss wanting Jake Cooper to see red

Millwall manager Gary Rowett has responded to opposite number Michael Duff’s claim that Jake Cooper should have been dismissed in Saturday’s fixture at The Den.

The centre-back conceded a penalty, stuck away by Jamal Lowe, after pulling back Swansea striker Jerry Yates inside the box.

Duff felt the foul merited Cooper being issued with a red card. Cooper received a booking.

Millwall lost the Championship fixture 3-0 with Matt Grimes and Mykola Kuharevich scoring in the second half.

Rowett, asked about Duff’s comment, told the South London Press: “As an opposing team you are always going to see that opportunity and think should it be a red card? I don’t know the answer to that.

“I think Muzza is deeper than Coops and is coming around on the cover – whether he gets there or not (is another matter).

“Does anyone really know the rules any more? Their goalkeeper took 40 seconds to take a goal-kick in the 15th minute and we were told that was going to be classed as wasting time. He gets booked midway through the second half.

“The rules and interpretations are constantly changing. Most people in football are a little unsure of some of the rulings. What is the ruling for a sending off now? Is that a covering defender? Has he intentionally played the ball? Has he stopped a goalscoring opportunity? I don’t know.”
