Women’s football round-up: Charlton Women have shot at derailing unbeaten Crystal Palace as Millwall record win

Charlton Athletic Women will be aiming to end Crystal Palace’s unbeaten start to the 2023-24 Championship campaign this weekend at The Valley.

The Eagles have scored 10 goals in their last two outings, brushing aside London City Lionesses 6-1 last Sunday with a hat-trick from Annabel Blanchard and strikes from Molly-Mae Sharpe, Shanade Hopcroft and Anna Fibley.

Laura Kaminski left her role as Addicks assistant manager to take the top job at Palace. The Eagles are third in the table and one point behind table-toppers Southampton.

Palace have scored the most goals in the Championship this season – 23 – eight more than Southampton.

Charlton are one place below Palace but have played one more game. They extended their unbeaten league run to four games after a 1-0 win at Blackburn last Sunday, with Kayleigh Green’s 49th-minute penalty the difference.

“It’s about building momentum,” manager Karen Hills told CharltonTV. “We always want to try to be positive and play with intent.

“We want to try to keep the clean sheets that we know that we can, then we can utilise our game changers, which we did.

“Crystal Palace have got out of the blocks really well – they’re playing some nice football and scoring a lot of goals. It’s going to be a really good derby game at The Valley.”

AFC Wimbledon moved to the top of the National League Division One South East after a 2-1 win at AFC Sudbury on Sunday with goals from Ashlee Hincks and Ellie Dorey.

Millwall Lionesses recorded a 3-2 victory over Ashford Ladies on Sunday afternoon as co-caretaker managers Adam Rowland and Alex Russell recorded their third straight win since taking over following Keith Boanas’ departure.

A brace from Emma Whitter and a goal from Liv McGregor moved the Lions up to seventh in the South East Women’s Regional Football League.
