Hercules Wimbledon round-up: Cornish pride as he is first club runner home in Telford 10k

Jonathan Cornish was first home out of half a dozen Hercules Wimbledon athletes who made the trip to Shropshire for the Telford 10k on Sunday, writes George Mallett.

Cornish finished in 48th place with a 29:49 clocking, 27 seconds outside his own personal best which is second on the club’s all-time list.

Just under a minute behind was George Mallett in 30:46 for 105th, four seconds outside his own PB.

Mallett spent much of the race yo-yoing with Charlie Wyllie (30:52).

Wyllie, a 1,500m specialist, took two minutes and 17 seconds off his best, set in 2016. It was good enough for 13th on the club’s all-time list.

James Stockings endured a difficult day, 10 seconds outside his own best in 31:27 for 150th.

His time of 31:17 last year sees him 20th in the all-time list.

Sam Peters was next home for Hercules, finishing in 242nd in 32:47, a 47-second improvement on his best set earlier this year.

Richard Jones was 376th in 34:13 with Simon Wade 403rd in 34:32.

Last week saw a number of Hercules juniors perform strongly at the Lee Valley Indoor Meet held on with a number of athletes achieving standards for the England National Indoor Championships, to be held on the weekend of February 10-11.

U15 pair Isabella Harrison and Freya McAndie both won their 600m races, running the distance for the first time.

Harrison won in 1:36.32, the fourth fastest UK indoor mark in her age group ever and only 0.43 seconds behind the British junior record.

It adds to Harrison’s achievements throughout the year that include winning her age group for the London Mini Marathon and the London Schools Cross Country title.

She finished with the fastest female time on the day, well within the National Indoor Championships standard.

McAndie ran 1:47.05, almost half a second clear of her nearest competitor.

U15 Beatrice Eminson set a PB (1:47.46) for second in the heat.

U13 Ted Giles ran 1:49.77, an improvement of more than 11 seconds on his 2022 best, finishing sixth in race four.

Allegra Adams (600m) earned a PB of 1:52.98.

Vivienne Jonczyk clocked 43.08 to run the UK indoor standard in the U17 300m age group, steering her to third in her heat.

Leo Johnson ran 49.03 for second in his heat and a new PB by more than three seconds.

Thomas Whorton, who already holds the U15 800m indoor standard, now has the 300m standard thanks to his 41.19 clocking, good enough for fifth in heat four.
