50 people escape block of flats after fire breaks out on ground floor
About 50 people managed to escape from a block of flats in the early hours of yesterday morning after a fire broke out on the ground floor.
Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters tackled the blaze in Tooting High Street, Tooting.
Part of a utility cupboard on the ground floor was damaged by the fire.
About 50 people evacuated from their flats before the London Fire Brigade (LFB) arrived. There were no reports of any injuries.
The LFB put up a 25-metre cordon as a precaution whilst crews worked to make the scene safe.
The Brigade was called at around midnight and the fire was under control by around 1.40am.
Firefighters from Tooting, Wimbledon, Mitcham and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.
A spokesman from the LFB said: “The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service.”
