Charlton sack Michael Appleton following Northampton defeat

Charlton Athletic have sacked Michael Appleton immediately after Tuesday night’s 3-2 League One defeat at home to Northampton.

The Addicks suffered a last-minute defeat at The Valley, with substitute Louis George Appere scoring in the 97th minute for the visitors.

South Londoners Charlton have lost six of their last seven outings under the former Lincoln boss and are just four points above the bottom four in the third tier.

They head to Blackpool on Saturday.

Appleton is the second permanent boss of the Addicks to lose their job this season, with Dean Holden being relieved of his duties just four games into the campaign.

The club statement read: “Charlton Athletic can confirm that Michael Appleton has left the club with immediate effect after being relieved of his role as Head Coach.

“The club would like to thank Michael for his efforts during his time in charge.”
