Lee Bowyer says that Charlton won’t be taking their foot off the gas just yet despite healthy points cushion in play-off race

Charlton look set fair for a place in League One’s end of season play-offs, but boss Lee Bowyer says they won’t be taking their foot of the gas just yet.

Tuesday evening’s home win over Burton Albion, coupled with seventh-placed Peterborough’s defeat at AFC Wimbledon, means that the South Londoners now have an eleven-point cushion inside the top six.

“We won’t be complacent,” said Bowyer.

“We go into every game trying to win and we’ll leave everything out there. I don’t think there’s been one game this season where the players haven’t tried. They know I wouldn’t accept that.

“They as a group wouldn’t accept that either, so they all push each other. There’s no worries of that happening. If anything, we might end up closing the gap a little bit on the top two. But we’ll have to see how the next couple of weeks go.”

An early penalty from Lyle Taylor edged the Addicks ahead on Tuesday before Lucas Akins responded in kind for the visitors on eighteen minutes.

Charlton Athletic’s Ben Reeves (centre) celebrates scoring his side’s second goal of the game

Ben Reeves’ diving header shortly before the break proved to be the winner as the home side held on during the second-period to grind out their win.

“The lads dug in deep tonight,” explained the Charlton boss.

“I think we looked a little bit lethargic. The fans helped us get through it second-half. They put so much into Saturday’s win over Portsmouth. Burton had an extra 24 hours on us as well. I’m proud of them. Was it the best game we’ve played? No. In the past we probably wouldn’t have won that game. But the mentality the spirit we have, we’re in a good place.

“It’s been a tough few days but we dug deep and now we’ve got to get ready for Saturday because that will be another tough one.”
