Millwall boss not thinking about longer terms stays for Tottenham and Burnley loan players

Millwall head coach Joe Edwards is not thinking about the prospects of keeping loan duo Japhet Tanganga and Michael Obafemi beyond the end of this Championship season.

Both players joined in the current transfer window.

Centre-back Tanganga signed from Tottenham while Obafemi had been struggling to get any significant game time at Burnley.

Tanganga made his first league start for the Lions in today’s 1-1 draw against Preston North End while Obafemi came on for the final 13 minutes.

Asked if the pair could become permanent fixtures of his squad, Edwards said: “To be honest, that will be stuff that is out of our control.

“Although I’d like to think long term, it is also about doing as well as we can this season. I don’t want to be in a position at the end which is worrying. I want us to win as many games as we can, as soon as we can – so it was about adding quality to the squad.

“Mid-Jan the performances – in terms of results as well as performances – had been up and down. If you can add players of their level then great.

“I suppose the flip of that is if Japh and Michael come here and have really strong second halves of the season then those two and their parent clubs then might see it different about what is best for them next year.

“From my point of view loan players are predominantly to improve the level in the here and now.”
