Alfie May: Charlton’s players must take ownership of poor season that has led to two managerial departures

Charlton forward Alfie May says the Addicks players must “take ownership” for their poor campaign.

The South Londoners have fired two managers this season – and we’re still in January.

Dean Holden was given his marching orders at the end of August, with his replacement Michael Appleton sacked last week after a run of no wins in 10 League One games.

May has had an excellent personal season, scoring 16 league goals to be joint-leader of the League One scorers chart.

His shot was turned in for an own-goal by Marvin Ekpiteta as the Addicks rescued a 1-1 draw at Blackpool on Saturday under interim boss Curtis Fleming.

May explained: “When your manager gets the sack it’s disappointing because you feel like you’ve let him down. Maybe we have. We have to take ownership. This is a team game. We’re all in it.

“It’s down to the collective, to all of us, to get results. Unfortunately, the manger loses out. It’s a horrible game but you have to move on. It’s football. We’ve still got 18 league games left. This was the start at Blackpool and we try to get a run together.

“I haven’t seen [the goal] back, but I’ll be claiming it. I don’t know if it will go down as me, but I don’t think that’s important right now. We’ve worked hard today and got a point. It’s something to build upon.

“They created good chances for themselves, Blackpool. They’re a good team, they’re up there for a reason. It’s important for us to stay together, be compact as a team, as a unit. We know how it’s been over recent weeks, but we’ve not given up fight or anything like that. It’s about keeping going and building on this result.”
