AFC Wimbledon book Capital Cup semi-final spot after win over Millwall

AFC Wimbledon moved into the last four of the Capital Cup after a 2-1 win over Millwall on Sunday.

The first chance of the game fell to Molly Childerhouse, who had a shot from distance, but her effort was well gathered by the Millwall goalkeeper.

Not long after, Millwall tested Lauren Allen in the Wimbledon goal, but she pulled out an excellent save and managed to gather the ball safely.

The opening goal of the game came from the Dons as Emily Donovan slotted the ball home. Sandra Soares Martins caused havoc in the box as the Millwall defence got themselves mixed up at the back.

The ball fell to Emily Donovan who slotted it under the goalkeeper and into the bottom corner, to make it AFC Wimbledon Women 1, Millwall Lionesses 0.

After a lovely pass through the box from Molly Childerhouse, the ball found its way to Ellie Dorey, who tucked the ball away to make it 2-0 to the Dons.

Sandra Soares Martins nearly had a goal of the season contender as she weaved her way in and out of the Millwall defence and tried her luck from the edge of the box but her shot rattled the crossbar.

Mid-way through the first half it was all one-way traffic from the home side.

The Dons had all the possession and chances, a few half-chances fell to Millwall, but Lauren Allen was never troubled.

The second half started more even as Millwall picked up the tempo.

Millwall pulled one back as an unfortunate own goal came off an attempted clearance by Ellie Dorey to make it 2-1.

With just under half an hour left on the clock, Kevin Foster made attacking changes as Skye Bacon came on to replace Steph Mann, and Ashleigh Goddard came on in place of Molly Childerhouse.

Sandra Soares Martins did some excellent work down the right-hand side to feed an excellent ball into Skye Bacon in the middle of the box, but her effort sailed over the bar.

With 15 minutes left on the clock, Rebecca Carter was called into action as she replaced Sandra Soares Martins.

Both goalkeepers were tested at both ends as Millwall looked for a late equaliser and the Dons looked to give themselves a two-goal cushion.

The home side were forced into a late change as Faye Baker had to be called to the field, to replace Lauren Allen, who picked up a head injury.

The Dons saw off Millwall and came away with the victory to send them one step closer to Silverware.
