Genre-busting orchestra takes to Brixton football pitch for free day concert
A lively ensemble of classically trained instrumentalists, performing everything from classical to Irish folk music and gospel, will take to a football pitch for an all day free concert next month.
The Brixton Chamber Orchestra (BCO) will set up at Brixton Recreation Centre’s 3G Football Pitch, in Station Road, on March 16, as part of the Brixton Performs Festival.
The day kicks off at 1pm with “Discover the Orchestra!”, an interactive workshop led by the BCO’s musicians and tailored to curious young minds aged eight to 12.
Children will have the opportunity to explore different instrument families, listen to live demonstrations, participate in singing and rhythm games, and even try their hand at playing various instruments under the guidance of seasoned professionals.
Later in the afternoon, the BCO will host an open rehearsal on the 3G football pitch, which audiences are invited to watch.
The day ends with an evening concert led by renowned fiddle player and Brixton resident, Dermot Crehan, and conducted by Matthew O’Keeffe.
From Rossini’s enchanting “La Cenerentola Overture” to the spirited melodies of traditional Irish music to celebrate the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day weekend, the performance will include favourites like “Give Me Your Hand” and “Riverdance”.
Mr O’Keeffe, artistic director and conductor of the BCO, said: “We are thrilled to be a part of the Brixton Performs Festival and to bring our love for music to the heart of Brixton.
“This event is a celebration of community, culture, and the power of music to bring us together.
“We invite everyone to join us for a day filled with joy, discovery, and of course, incredible music!”
Admission to both the workshop and concert is free. Pre-registration for the workshop is encouraged and seats for the concert can be reserved in advance, with limited tickets available at the door on a first-come, first-served basis.
