Neil Harris: Any punishment for Millwall winger Shane Ferguson will stay private

Neil Harris says any punishment for Shane Ferguson will stay private – with the Millwall left-footer set for a three-game ban.

The Northern Ireland international was sent off in the closing stages of extra-time in Sunday’s FA Cup defeat to Brighton for stamping on Lewis Dunk, writes Richard Cawley.

“Shane was one of our best players – he was that good,” said Harris.

“It was frustration. Tired legs and a tired mind. He should have had a free-kick leading up to the red card – he was fouled twice in the split seconds before.

“Shane gives the foul away and you can’t react like that. It is out of character as a player and as a person. It shows his winning mentality – and he’s made an error.

“Not only would he have been one of our best penalty-takers but he’s also been one of our most consistent performers.

“We’re going to miss Shane. Any punishment I want to deliver will be between myself and the player, and we’ll move on.

“The biggest thing is that he’s going to be a loss to the group. Shane’s misfortune will lead to an opportunity for others. People need to step up and perform at a crucial stage of the season.”
