Nathan Jones admits he ‘hammered’ Harry Isted in the dressing room following error that gifted Northampton Town a point

Charlton manager Nathan Jones admits he gave goalkeeper Harry Isted a ticking off after his error led to Northampton’s late equaliser at Sixfields.

The Addicks looked to be coasting to a second successive victory following Karoy Anderson’s early opener.

But Isted was caught in possession by Sam Hoskins 10 minutes from time, allowing Louis Appere to slot into an empty net for a share of the spoils.

Alfie May hit a post shortly before the Cobblers leveller but the South Londoners were unable to turn a seemingly comfortable position into victory.

“I’ve hammered him,” revealed Jones when asked what he said to Isted following the error.

“I probably shouldn’t have. What was said will stay in [the dressing room] but I’m disappointed in him because he’s a real good keeper. He’s been brilliant all afternoon and since I’ve come back in, and he’s just allowed that to happen. Sometimes your emotion gets the better of you. He won’t do that again. He’s never made an error like that for me since I’ve known him. He got an earful, but we move on from that.

“He will bounce back. He’s a great kid. I love him. I spoke to him in there. We’re in a situation where we’ve got to be professional in everything we do and see games out. When we’re on top we have to see games out and if we don’t then we keep clean sheets and win anyway. We didn’t quite do that today.

“My initial reaction is pure disappointment,” added Jones after a fifth game without defeat in League One leaves the Addicks four points above the drop zone.

“We didn’t deserve to draw that game. Second-half we controlled the game. We dominated. We had real good situations and chances to put the game to bed. We didn’t and then it’s a big error that has gifted them a point. That’s the disappointing thing. Overall, the level of performance, how we went about it and grafted, I’m really proud of them. Showed we’re a very difficult side to beat when we go after teams. We can grind a team down and then we started playing some really nice football. I’m just disappointed we’ve drawn it.

“Only a gift was going to give them a goal today, second-half. That’s not being disrespectful, it’s just reiterating how well we defended. How organised we were. We were in total control. Right before they had that chance we had a glorious chance to put it to bed. We didn’t do it at that end and then a big error.”
