Paul Simpson makes request to Carlisle squad ahead of Charlton trip

Carlisle United boss Paul Simpson has urged his squad to forget about the league table ahead of Saturday’s clash at Charlton Athletic.

The Cumbrians are rock bottom of the League One table and 15 points from safety heading into the final stage of the 2023-24 season.

Carlisle, who won promotion from League Two last season, have only picked up 23 points this campaign.

Nathan Jones has dragged Charlton away from relegation danger, with the Addicks unbeaten in six and 14th in the table.

“They’re a good side,” Simpson told Carlise’s YouTube channel.

“They have good individuals. I know they lost a few in January and lost a few key players from injury.

“They were one of the fancied teams at the start of the season when Dean Holden was in there.

“I spoke with Dean last summer and they were having a real go for it.

“They’re a good squad and Nathan has gone in. He’s a really experienced manager and has a fantastic record at some of the clubs he has worked at.

“He’s got them going again and organised them. They’re six games unbeaten against some good sides as well.

“It’s going to be a tough game but we have to make sure we keep trying to improve as much as we can.

“We’re going into it with as positive a mindset as we possibly can. We have to forget about the league table – that’s what it is and we can’t change that.

“We just have to do everything we possibly can to get some wins.”
