Nathan Jones recalls Charlton defender acquitting himself well against Kazenga LuaLua
Nathan Jones reckons that new signing Kazenga LuaLua has proved a handful for any full-back he faces – but remembers Charlton’s Chris Solly acquitting himself well against the winger.
The Addicks snapped up LuaLua last week with the former Brighton and Luton Town wideman recently becoming a free agent.
The 33-year-old made his debut for the South London club as a substitute in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Fleetwood Town.
LuaLua is the 26th player to debut for Charlton this season with 48 players used in all competitions.
“He will add something different,” Charlton manager Jones told the South London Press. “He has had a wonderful career. I remember watching him at Brighton and I only saw one right-back do well against him – and ironically that was Chris Solly, who is a fantastic one-v-one defender.
“I remember Charlton drew 0-0 with Brighton in the 2012-2013 season, the year Brighton got to the play-off semis. Chris was magnificent against Kazenga.
“Kazenga is a wonderful player – one-v-one and has real potency. He has something different to other players.
“I enjoyed working with him at Brighton and then I had the opportunity to sign him at Luton. We got him in and he did fantastic for Luton. He played a key role in the promotion and the survival year the year later.
“When the opportunity arose (to sign him now) it was something we lack – because it’s only Tyreece Campbell who can really play in wide areas. We wanted to have that option and Kazenga gives us that.”
