Charlton striker Alfie May: I’ll have my boots on for next tunnel jump at The Valley

Alfie May wants another crack at performing Charlton Athletic’s tunnel jump celebration – and promises next time he will do it in his football boots.

Footage of League One’s top goalscorer went viral recently when May slipped over as he did the traditional celebration to mark a home victory at The Valley over Carlisle United.

“I’ve had a few messages, even now, about it,” May told the South London Press. “It goes down in the history books – one of the best tunnel jumps at Charlton! The minute I planted my foot I knew I was gone.

“I had to make sure I landed – imagine I had to go in and tell the gaffer I got injured by doing it. I don’t think it would go down too well.

“I gave it the big un. I knew I was going to get asked to do it but my heels were sore from my boots, I was wearing newish ones. I took them off when I came off.

“Tracey (Leaburn, head of first-team player care) told me to put my boots back on but I said no. She said I needed to. I said: ‘Thierry (Small) watch this – it’s easy’. Apparently he asked Tracey if that was what you had to do – falling on the floor.

“When I retire I’m pretty sure it will still get a mention.

“I’ll do it in boots next time.”
