‘They decided the game in this phase’ – Oliver Glasner reflects on Crystal Palace’s 4-2 defeat at home to Man City

Oliver Glasner says Manchester City decided their 4-2 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday with a 20-minute second-half spell that showed their quality.

The Eagles gave themselves the dream start after Adam Wharton cleverly played Jean-Philippe Mateta through in his own half to set the French striker through on goal.

Mateta kept his cool and slotted past Stefan Ortega to net his fourth goal under Glasner to put Palace ahead.

City quickly equalised 10 minutes later when Kevin De Bruyne cut in on his right foot and curled a stunning shot past Dean Henderson.

The champions moved level at the top of the Premier League with leaders Liverpool with three second-half goals – Rico Lewis, Erling Haaland and De Bruyne again – giving Pep Guardiola’s side all three points.

Odsonne Edouard brought Palace back into the game when he converted Jeffrey Schlupp’s cross with five minutes of normal time remaining, but the Eagles were unable to find a way back into the game.

“It was a little bit difficult today,” said Glasner.

“When you lose 4-2, I’m never satisfied and happy with the result.

“I could see many positive things today in our play. What I told you [the press] yesterday in the press conference about going for the win, you could feel it from the first second of the game.

“We scored an excellent first goal.

“Their equaliser was too fast and then we could see their dominance in possession.

“We always looked to be dangerous and we had another good opportunity in the first half.

“Their second goal was too quick again after the second half started. These are the top teams. They had 15 to 20 minutes, four chances and three goals.

“They decided the game in this phase. I’m really pleased with the energy we had. The substitutes brought a new energy.

“We scored a nice second goal and had a big opportunity just before. Maybe everything would have been possible.

“It’s not so easy to win against City because they lost their last game in December.

“The performance was really good, but when you concede four goals, it’s too much. We could have defended their second and third goals better.

“The result is the quality of Man City.”
