Millwall and Charlton pay respects to Dave Mehmet

Millwall and Charlton have both paid their respects after former player Dave Mehmet passed away at the age of 63.

Both sides posted on their X social media accounts that they were saddened to hear of Mehmet’s death.

Gillingham’s website confirmed that Mehmet had passed away following a stroke.

He graduated through Millwall’s academy and made 153 appearances for the Lions, scoring 17 times.

The midfielder became Millwall’s youngest goalscorer when he netted the equaliser at The Den in a 1-1 draw against Sheffield United in October 1977 as a 17-year-old.

Mehmet was part of the Lions side which won the FA Youth Cup in 1979.

He was also the youngest Millwall player to reach 100 appearances at 19 years, 260 days when he faced Brentford in August 1980.

Mehmet, who also had spells with Gillingham and Tampa Bay Rowdies, spent the 1982-83 campaign with Charlton.

He returned to Millwall in 1986 and left in 1988 to join Fisher.

Neil Harris’ side will wear black armbands during tonight’s Championship fixture with Leicester City as a mark of respect.
