Millwall boss Harris fields transfer window question over Burnley loanee Michael Obafemi

Millwall head coach Neil Harris was asked if he envisaged Michael Obafemi still being part of his squad next season after the Burnley loanee scored in the 3-1 win over Cardiff City.

The Republic of Ireland international got a standing ovation when he was replaced in the second half. And the home fans at The Den also rose to their feet to show their respect for Obafemi when he made way in the midweek victory against Leicester.

“I won’t talk about Michael as an individual or with anything to do with the summer transfer window,” said Harris, when quizzed about the number 21’s longer-term future.

“My job was to produce a Millwall team as quickly as I could. Michael was our only fit number nine….well he wasn’t fit. I think he had started one game in two years, or something. That was what I was working with walking into the building.

“We had to get Michael up to speed. I spent a lot of time with Michael. Michael owed me that goal today – I’ll leave it at that, for why. His performances have got so much better. He is starting to look like a Millwall number nine, what Tom Bradshaw learned over a period of time to do – I’ve got to teach Kevin Nisbet as well.

“What a number nine does at this football club can be different to elsewhere. The demand from the fanbase is you work hard without the ball, you run the channels when you have got the ball – but you score goals as well. That’s not easy. You have to be fit to do it, by the way, so Michael has progressed.

“The challenge for Michael today was that (the 1-0 win on Tuesday over Leicester) was his best performance in a Millwall shirt, can he be better? It was a very tight call for me, different today because he scored.”
