Report praises university’s community impact amidst funding struggles
The University of Greenwich offers valuable contributions to the UK economy, environment and society, according to a new report published today.
The Economic and Social Impact Assessment Report, commissioned by the university, was put together by Mickledore, a UK-based independent consultancy.
The study revealed that the university – based in the Old Royal Naval College, Park Row – saw a return of £5.50 for every £1 spent, employs 2,528 staff members and generates an estimated £341million in tax contributions to the UK economy.
Professor Jane Harrington, vice-chancellor and chief executive of University of Greenwich, said: “This report puts into focus and commitment to social mobility and impactful research, as well as our significant financial and social impact on our local communities and the economies of the UK and beyond.
“I am proud to see what we deliver, and hopeful of what the University of Greenwich will continue to contribute moving forward.”
The report comes as universities across the country face financial pressures because of the declining real-terms value of tuition fees and falls in international student numbers.
Just last month, Goldsmiths University announced plans under consultation that would lead to almost half the academics in three university departments being axed.
A spokesman for Goldsmiths said the cuts came in response to “a funding system that is widely acknowledged to be no longer fit for purpose”.
