‘Every Charlton player wants George Dobson to stay’ – Midfielder Conor Coventry on skipper’s future
Conor Coventry is hoping that George Dobson’s goal at The Valley on Saturday is not his final exploits in a Charlton Athletic shirt.
Midfielder Dobson signed a pre-contract agreement with Hungarian side Fehervar in February after the Addicks – and in particular manager Nathan Jones – pulled the plug on a February switch.
The former Sunderland player, who also had a spell on loan at AFC Wimbledon, has not allowed his own situation to affect his performances.
Dobson scored the equalised goal against Shrewsbury Town with Charlton fans in the Covered End chanting for him to stay on the League One club’s payroll.
But the move to Fehervar is legally binding and the only way to avoid that would be if the two clubs were to come to an agreement.
Jones talked again at the weekend about wanting to still be able to call upon his captain, 26, as a player in the 2024-25 season.
Asked about Dobson scoring in his last home appearance for Charlton, Coventry – signed from West Ham in January – said: “Hopefully not – I’d love him to stay as well. It was a good goal, a great pass from Connor (Wickham) and he took it really well.
“I don’t understand the situation on the contract, what is going on, but I know every player in the dressing room would love him to stay. He is a big part of what we’re doing and done this season.
“He’s been professional and focused on this game and the next one we’ve got. There hasn’t been too much talk about it. Everyone knows how much he loves playing here and how much he has enjoyed his time.
“I haven’t heard this from him but I’m sure he would love to stay as well.”
