Construction workers escape fire at derelict Croydon pub

About 25 firefighters tackled a fire that ripped through a derelict pub in Croydon yesterday afternoon.

Four fire engines were called to the fire at the Windmill Pub in St James’ Road, at around 1.45pm.

Part of the ground floor in the three-storey property was destroyed by fire.

Five construction workers managed to escape the building before the London Fire Brigade (LFB) arrived. There were no reports of any injuries.

The LFB received 23 calls alerting it to the fire. The incident was under control by around 2.40pm.

Fire crews from Croydon and Norbury fire stations were in attendance.

A spokeswoman for the LFB said the cause of the fire was under investigation.

The incident comes just six months after police launched a probe into what they described as a “suspicious” blaze at the premises on August 31.

At the time, a spokeswoman for the LFB said the “whole of the second floor” and the roof of the building were destroyed by fire, resulting in a roof collapse.

There were no reports of injuries during that incident and the fire continues to be investigated by the Met.
