Plough Lane to host London International 7s Tournament in build up to Paris Olympics
AFC Wimbledon’s Plough Lane will host teams from around the world after they have been selected to stage a prestigious rugby union event on May 25.
Though the football season will be over, there’ll still be plenty of incentive to visit Plough Lane on Bank Holiday weekend with the London International 7s Tournament – “London 7s” – hosted here.
The men’s line-up will feature powerhouse national sides from the USA, Ireland, Germany, Jamaica and Uganda, battling it out against the best elite teams in the world including the British Army, Shoguns (formerly Samurai 7s) to represent the UK, and Rugby for Heroes representing Fiji.
The women’s competition promises equal excitement, with national teams from the USA, Jamaica and Uganda taking on elite side Hammerheads (representing GB) to ensure a day filled with exhilarating rugby action.
Bal Srai, head of Revenue and operations, said: “In recent years we’ve hosted events that have attracted worldwide interest, including the FA Women’s Conti Cup Final, plus a Women’s international fixture between Australia and Scotland.
“Hosting the London International 7s Tournament is another big honour for us and highlights the potential of the Cherry Red Records Stadium to stage big events – this being another sport to showcase the possibilities. It’ll be great to see our stadium being used for a very different event over the Bank Holiday weekend.”
Mike Friday, Head Coach of USA 7s, said: “This will be a fantastic event and much needed in the 7s calendar in England with London 7s not taking place this year. It is a real opportunity for international teams to find valuable competition time for players in the lead-up to the Paris Olympics.”
