Millwall facing deadline for appeal decision on Tottenham defender Japhet Tanganga’s red card

Millwall have to make a decision today whether to appeal Japhet Tanganga’s red card at Swansea City on Saturday.

The on-loan Tottenham centre-back was dismissed after an incident with home striker Jerry Yates, who was also handed his marching orders.

Tanganga is out of contract in the summer but Spurs have the option to extend his contract by 12 months, ensuring they would receive a transfer fee if he was to move on.

If the former England U21 international does remain in the English game next season then he would have to serve a three-match ban if the decision by Geoff Eltringham is not contested.

“The problem with appeals is it is about the camera angles – which aren’t great,” Millwall head coach Neil Harris told the South London Press. “A decision has got to be made in the next 24 hours as to whether we are going to appeal that or not.

“It is very difficult to appeal decisions in the last game of the season, not knowing where the player is going to be next year.

“I thought it was harsh on Japhet. When you think Dan Ballard ran 15 yards and shoved over Zian Flemming last week – and at neck height – he didn’t get a card for it. Japhet and Jerry Yates is a sort of push and shove. The fact it resulted in a straight red for Japhet, I do find it very inconsistent.

“IFAB is so keen to change every rule going that no-one has an idea what is going on. Then, in instances like this, there is no consistency. That is something that has got to be looked into.

“A decision on appealing for Japh has to be made today. We’re still trying to gain more footage with the options exhausted from Swansea and ourselves – we’re going through social media just to see what has been filmed.”
