‘Fantastic life experience’ – Millwall midfielder says capital life ‘very different’ to his previous surroundings

George Honeyman has described living in London as “a fantastic life experience”.

The Millwall midfielder has one year left to run on the deal he signed after signing from Hull City in June 2022.

Prior to that Honeyman, 29, had been on the books of Sunderland since the age of 10.

And the Lions player, born in Prudhoe, a town just south of the River Tyne, admits the capital is an eye-opener.

“I live close to the training ground, about five minutes away, and it is a lot different,” Honeyman told South London Press. “But it is a fantastic life experience.

“Myself and my partner know how lucky we are to have this experience while we are in our 20s, with no kids, and both be living and working in London.

“It is a lot different to what I’m used to – I’m from a little town in Northumberland where there is one train every two hours and it has two coaches. When my mum came down to visit there were 10 coaches, every 15 minutes, from a little platform in London. It’s very different.

“People will travel here and spent fortunes just for a weekend.

“Every time me and my fiance get into Charing Cross and we go across the Thames – you’ve got the London Eye and Big Ben – we still pinch ourselves that we actually live here. It is very surreal.”

Honeyman has praised Neil Harris for the complete turnaround in Millwall’s Den form after his appointment in February.

The Lions head coach won five and drew the other match he had in SE16 after replacing Joe Edwards.

“In terms of how he lifted the group and individuals, he kind of flipped the switch on the pressure,” said Honeyman. “He is such a fans’ favourite that they were in fantastic spirits as soon as they saw him on the sideline there.

“It helped that we beat Southampton away before his first home game.

“It’s been such a massive part of Millwall and its history – having fantastic home form. We flipped a little switch on that hopefully.”
