Community kitchen gets special visit from High Sheriff

The High Sheriff of Greater London visited a nonprofit hunger relief organisation this weekend.

On June 16, Rotherhithe Community Kitchen, in Rotherhithe Street, welcomed the High Sheriff of Greater London, Millicent Grant, for its weekly free Sunday meal and food bank. 

The High Sheriff holds a mostly ceremonial role as a symbolic representative for the justice system in London.

Since November 2023, the Rotherhithe Community Kitchen has provided meals to more than 8,000 residents and plans to expand its operations in the future.

Vimal Pandya, a volunteer with Rotherhithe Community Kitchen, said that Ms Grant arrived at 7.30am on Sunday morning in order to be present for every step of the charity’s Sunday activities, from food preparation to packaging and distribution.

Mr Pandya said his team presented her Ms Grant with flowers before she left, and made sure that she had the chance to try the curry and rice which had been prepared for the day.

Mr Pandya said that he was touched by the High Sheriff’s willingness to take time out of her day to visit the kitchen.

He said: “She was a lovely, humble and intelligent lady who was gracious and generous with her time and she thanked us all for giving her such a warm welcome.”
