Court 1
Anca Todoni v Coco Gauff 2-6, 1-6
Coco Gauff zipped into the third round with a straight sets victory over Anca Todoni under the closed roof of Court 1.
It was a match of two powerful hitters but the US star was just a bit more powerful, especially on the first serve.
That set the template for the game and while the Romania sought to overpower her opponent, it was never going to be her day.
The match lasted
It took American Coco Gauff 39 minutes to see off any resistance from the unseeded Romanian Anca Todini.
Gauff, 20, allowed her powerful first serve to dominate games – reaching up to 121MPH she sent Todini, 19, all over the court.
To her credit Todini had some wonderful ground strokes and occasionally whipped the ball past a shocked Gauff.
But in tennis as in most sports, it’s the fine margins that count and the young American showed just why she is seeded 2 at this year’s Championships.
She broke Todini easily in the opening game of the second set, before taking a 2-0 lead and arrowed seemingly towards an early victory.
A game held by Todoni gave the other youngster some confidence she could make a game of it, but Gauff then won her game to take a 3-1 lead with Todoni making too many unforced errors.
Soon it was 4-1 one Gauff serve and he opponent was, by now wishing she was back in the locker room.
Then four became five and the Romanian was serving to stay in the tournament.
Then it was 15-40 after an hour and five minutes, before a delicate drop shot saw Todini miss and it was all over.
