Man charged with murder after body of woman, 70, found in home

A man has been charged with murder after the body of a 70-year-old woman was found inside her west London home last month.

Clifford Cowen, 57, of Kensington Park Gardens, Notting Hill, was charged with the murder of Rita Fleming at Wimbledon Magistrates Court on Friday. He will next appear in custody at the Old Bailey tomorrow.

An investigation was launched after police were called to Ms Fleming’s address in Golborne Road in Ladbroke Grove, on June 23. Ms Fleming’s body was found inside the property.

Her next of kin have been informed and continue to be supported by specially trained officers, the Met said.

Cowen was charged by detectives on July 4. He was initially arrested on June 23, and bailed while further enquiries were carried out.

Police have confirmed that Cowen and Ms Fleming were known to each other.
