‘We have more than enough’ – Matty Godden on Charlton Athletic sharing goalscoring burden after Alfie May’s departure
Matty Godden says there is more than enough within the Charlton Athletic squad to supplement the departure of Alfie May.
The 32-year-old striker joined the Addicks this summer and arrived a day after May, 31, was sold to League One rivals Birmingham City.
May, who was the Golden Boot award in the third tier last seaosn after netting 23 goals in his debut campaign for Charlton, handed in a transfer request to join the recently relegated Blues.
“Players come and players score a lot of goals,” Godden told the South London Press.
“Alfie scored a lot of goals here, but the gaffer now has his style of play and what he wants to do to get out of League One.
“The gaffer has brought in players who suit the way he wants to play.
“I know we have lost Alfie, but I’m confident that with all the strikers and midfielders here and who are coming into the club, we have more than enough to achieve something.”
Godden won League One with Coventry in the 2019-20 campaign and has scored 90 goals across his EFL career.
He added: “I score goals whenever I have been – I don’t lack confidence in that department.
“The way that he [Nathan Jones] spoke to me and the way he made me feel was important to be as well.
“Having a manager who believes in you is another thing. He was a big factor in me coming to the football club as well.
“I’m looking forward to working under him and getting some goals.”
The Addicks have also bolstered Jones’ striker department by signing Gassan Ahadme, 23, from Ipswich Town.
Ahadme scored 13 goals in 23 starts for Cambridge United last term as they stayed up by four points.
Godden added: “I’ve only been with him 10 days or so, but he’s another hard working centre forward as well.

“Hopefully, the two of us can put fear into League One centre-halves with the pressing and physicality that we’re going to have.”
Miles Leaburn is stepping up his return and continuing his rehabilitation from hamstring surgery.
Fellow youngster Dan Kanu also impressed when recalled from Southend United last season, scoring three times under Jones in League One.
“All the forward boys are going to be important over the season,” Godden said.
“Everybody won’t play 46 games – boys are going to have to chip in.
“There are going to be good competition for places as well – that’s something you need to be successful.”
