Herne Hill-born Georgi claims fifth in Paris 2024 women’s road cycling race

Herne Hill-born Pfeiffer Georgi claimed fifth in the women’s road cycling race at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

But Team GB and Georgi, pictured centre, were left to rue a missed opportunity as Austrian Kristen Faulkner claimed a shock win.

Great Britain were the only nation to have three riders in a lead group of 12 that approached the cobbled climbs of Montmartre – 30 kilometres from the finish line.

The 23-year-old Georgi was left to fight for herself with Lizzie Deignan and Anna Henderson dropping off early.

That allowed Faulkner to claim victory under the Eiffel Tower.

Georgi said: “I’m a bit gutted. I felt really good. I was really hoping something special might happen and I could be in with a shout for a medal. But on the last climb, my legs said no. For my first Olympics, I can’t be too disappointed with fifth.

“I don’t know if we got it right. It’s the Olympics, I think anything can happen. I’d rather die trying than not try at all.

“We were really just trying to stay towards the front to keep an eye on everything so we weren’t relying on the boards. That was amazing. Best crowd I’ve ever experienced in my life, it was something else.

“There’s always things to improve, we could have done a few things differently. The Olympics is a completely different dynamic to any other race.

“We’re never team-mates on the road, so it is a combination of things, it’s new. It’s an unpredictable race and you just have to try and do what you can in totally different circumstances.”
