‘We’d love West Ham or Crystal Palace’ – Millwall midfielder hoping for EFL Cup derby draw

Millwall midfielder George Honeyman is hoping that they are drawn against Crystal Palace or West Ham United in the next round of the EFL Cup.

Romain Esse’s goal sealed a 1-0 win for the Lions at Portsmouth last night.

The South Londoners will find out their opponents when the second round draw is made this evening.

“A few of the lads were saying, a London team would be preferable,” said Honeyman, when asked who he would like to face.

“We’d love a derby, a Crystal Palace or a West Ham. I’m sure the fans would absolutely love that as well. You don’t get many chances to do that, so hopefully it comes. But whoever we come against, if it’s not a team like that, then it is maybe another chance to progress.

“We’ll see but I’ll be keeping a keen eye on it tomorrow night (Wednesday).”

Honeyman says he has not set any personal targets for this season.

“The gaffer has been quite honest with me that I am probably going to play quite a number of positions,” said the former Hull and Sunderland midfielder.

“If I knew I was going to play a number 10 all season I would want close to double figures with goals and assists. Maybe double figures on goals is a bit ambitious but I’ve been pretty good on the assists spectrum in my career.

“Listen, I am on set-pieces so if I can get double figures for assists that would be a great start and I defo need to chip in with a few goals. If I could get five I would be delighted. It depends where I am playing.

“I just want to be part of a successful team. I’m at a stage in my career where I like winning football games and I’m not too fussed if my name is on the scoresheet.”
