Eltham’s ‘astrophysicist’ off to Brazil with top A-levels in his pocket

Eltham College is celebrating a fine collection of A-level results this year – with one Oxford-bound student hearing good news on the eve of trip to Brazil for an astrophysics Olympiad.

Many of the hard-working sixth formers confirmed their places at a host of prestigious universities.

This year, once again, the highest three grades – A*, A and B – have proved the norm for students at Eltham, named London Independent School of the Year 2024 by The Sunday Times.

No fewer than 90 per cent of results fell within this top bracket, while an impressive two-thirds (65 per cent) of grades were awarded at A*/A. A total of 28 per cent of results attained were the exceptional A* grade.

Fine performances across a full range of subjects saw almost one in every seven students (15 per cent) achieve an outstanding suite of at least A*A*A* in their results.

Unsurprisingly, the majority of students have secured places at their first-choice university, including Oxbridge and Russell Group institutions.

Every student holding an offer for medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine achieved the results needed to secure their place, as did those heading on to study mathematics. The arts have also yielded places at first-choice institutions.

In art, no fewer than 83 per cent of grades were at A* level; in drama, more than half (53 per cent) were likewise A*, and there was a clean sweep of A grades in music.

With linguistics students similarly seeing 94 per cent of their grades fall in the top A*/A tier, all those set to continue language study have secured their university place, while geographers, too, were all smiles, after 87 per cent of their grades reached A*/A.

Among those celebrating today were Atharv Gupta – whose clean sweep of A* grades secured him a place at Oxford to study physics, and who collected his results on the eve of his flight to Brazil to represent the UK at the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics.

Ukrainian refugee Karina Osman was given a bursary place at the school after fleeing the war in her country and is now off to the University of Nottingham to study veterinary medicine.

“We are so proud of our students and all they have achieved this year,” said headmaster, Guy Sanderson.

“These results are testament to their dedication, determination and sheer hard work, and are all the more impressive in the context of the enormous contribution beyond the classroom – whether on the sports field or the stage, in concert or in service to others – that each has made.

“I send my congratulations to all and very best wishes for the future. My heartfelt thanks go also to their inspirational teachers, whose commitment and care underpin these results.”
