Charlton Athletic defender Josh Edwards set for X-ray to determine full extent of injury

Charlton Athletic are facing a nervy wait to discover the full extent of Josh Edwards’ injury in today’s 1-0 win over Wigan Athletic.

The Scottish defender was stretchered off in the 27th minute at The Valley after a late and dangerous tackle by former Addicks player Sean Clare.

Referee Edward Duckworth only booked Clare.

Edwards, signed from Dunfermline this summer, had to be replaced by Thierry Small.

“We’ll have to wait and see until Monday and we get it x-rayed and scanned,” said Charlton manager Nathan Jones.

“It’s not a good challenge. It’s a poor challenge. I’ve been in to see the referee and he has instinctively reacted and given a yellow – if that goes to VAR it is a straight red all day long.”

Jones was booked for the second match running. His opposite number Richie Wellens was also cautioned.

The Leyton Orient head coach blasted Duckworth. He said: ““I got booked for clapping my full-back being in a really good position. He thought I was clapping him. They guess.

“[He was] miles off it. And if the FA keep their standards up about how referees perform that they don’t get a game next week then I hope I don’t see him on a teamsheet next week. He ruined the game.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he travels home tonight with a whistle stuck to his lips.”

Jones said: “I sacrifice my life for this. I sacrifice every part of my life in terms of making Charlton better, so sometimes I get carried away and I need to control that.

“I’m not saying the referee was poor. There was a lot of stoppages and they were going down with cramp – five or six stoppages. I’m not sure the ref was bad enough for either side. If he gets every decision right today then they are down to 10 men anyway.

“I don’t really see the value in moaning about the referee. After that challenge Tyreece Campbell is in and he’s pulled him back.

“His performance was exactly the same for both sides.”
