More prosecutions for Blue Badge fraud in Greenwich

Greenwich’s continuing crack-down on Blue Badge misuse has resulted in four more successful prosecutions for the council at Bexley Magistrates Court in the past month.

On July 31, Ronnie Lee Slack, a global accounts manager from Woolwich Road, Greenwich, pleaded guilty to illegal use of a Blue Badge for parking on September 22, 2023.

The badge belonged to a deceased relative who had passed away six months earlier. Slack was fined £415, with an added £166 victim surcharge and £878 in prosecution costs.

On the same day, James McDermott, of Ripon Road, Plumstead, pled guilty to using a deceased person’s Blue Badge on September 25 last year. McDermott was fined £120, with a £48 victim surcharge and £940.25 in prosecution costs.

On August 14, Fatema Begum, of Downs Park Road, Dalston, East London, was found guilty of failing to name the driver of her vehicle misusing the Blue Badge.

The vehicle was found in the borough displaying a stolen Blue Badge on October 24 last year. Begum was fined £220, with an £88 victim surcharge and £85 in prosecution costs.

On the same day, Vandon Nguyen, of Holburne Road, Blackheath, admitted to displaying a stolen Blue Badge, on October 6 2023, that he found on the pavement near his workplace. Nguyen parked in a designated disabled bay and was fined £167, with a £67 victim surcharge and £85 in prosecution costs.

Misusing a Blue Badge is a criminal offence and those found guilty can face prosecution and fines of up to £1,000.

Greenwich council has issued an appeal for anyone suspecting of committing Blue Badge fraud in the Royal Borough to report it by calling 0800 169 6975 or by emailing fraud@royalgreenwich.gov.uk.
