Millwall release statement as record signing reports for national team duty despite injury concern

Millwall believe a period of rehabilitation is the best course of action for record signing Mihailo Ivanovic, despite the Serbia FA calling the striker up for their upcoming Nations League games.

Neil Harris confirmed over the weekend that the 19-year-old was set to be sidelined for up to two months with a broken metatarsal.

Ivanovic joined on deadline day from Serbian top-flight side Vojvodina for a club record fee which is in excess of £2.5million.

Millwall said on Wednesday morning: “We are proud that Mihailo Ivanović’s talent and hard work has been recognised to represent Serbia’s national team at just 19 years old. 

“Mihailo was identified earlier this summer as a player with incredible potential, and we are delighted to have signed him on a long-term contract. 

“During a series of extensive medical tests, the club identified a potential short-term metatarsal injury which could be managed in London with the best care.

“Our medical team is of the belief that a period of rehabilitation is in the best interests of Mihailo, and knows his national team will take great care of him. 

“The club remain in constant contact with the Serbian FA. We wish Mihailo the very best during his first of many call-ups to the international team, and look forward to seeing him in a Millwall shirt over the coming months.”

Millwall have made the Serbian FA aware of their findings from the medical, however, they deem Ivanovic fit enough to take part in the camp ahead of their outing against Euro 2024 winners Spain on Thursday.

Ivanovic was unveiled to the Millwall fans ahead of their 3-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday at The Den.

The Lions boss said: “Mihailo is a young player. He has been called into the Serbian squad. I think everyone needs to know he is not going to be available for eight weeks due to injury.”
