Luton Town loanee Allan Campbell enjoys ‘drive and intensity’ of Charlton Athletic boss Nathan Jones

Allan Campbell is relishing the opportunity to work once again with Nathan Jones after his loan switch to Charlton Athletic last week.

The 26-year-old Scottish midfielder, snapped up from Luton Town, was an unused substitute in Saturday’s 2-0 League One loss at Reading.

Campbell will be hoping to get his first minutes for the Addicks in their home game against Rotherham United on Saturday.

Jones was Luton manager when they signed the Glaswegian, who had come out of contract at Motherwell in the summer of 2021.

“He’s definitely one of the best I’ve worked with – in terms of getting the best out of me and helping me improve,” Campbell told the South London Press. “In the season we got to the play-offs, at the end of it I made my first appearance for Scotland. I was in and around the squad, which is something I am ambitious about.

“He is someone who analyses your game and tells you bits you can improve on the pitch. He does a lot of individual work. I have strived under the drive and intensity he has as a person.

“Hopefully we can have another successful time together here and we can see what happens.”

Campbell is out of contract at the end of next season.

He had a season-long loan with Millwall in the Championship last season but did not feature at first-team level after December.

Campbell said: “I had a chat with Nathan, obviously I know him previously from Luton and it’s how I dropped down from Scotland in the first place. I had a successful spell at Luton with him. Once I spoke to him and his ambitions – the current team, where he sees it going, where he sees me in the team, how I can help the team kick on and improve – it made my mind up.

“When I left Motherwell my ambition was to come down to England and play at as high level as I could, to try and improve myself. It was the best place to go. I came down and had a meeting with the gaffer, Nathan. He did a presentation to me and it was brilliant. He spoke about his plans and ambitions. He is someone who strives to get better every day and that sold me.

“When I had the chat with him before I came here it was the same sort of chats. Same vision. I’m the sort of player who is attracted to a person who is ambitious and wants to get better. I think I can thrive in that sort of environment.”

Campbell has never played at The Valley before.

“I’m looking forward to it,” he said.

“One thing you need to keep on track is your home form and make sure nobody likes coming to play there. I’m sure the fans will be right behind the team, from what I’ve heard it is a great atmosphere. I’m looking forward to being part of it and getting going on Saturday.”
