Summer gym sessions and extra hard graft have helped Charlton Athletic striker play bigger part this season

Tyreece Campbell has revealed that he hit the gym hard in the summer as he looked to become more of a central player for Charlton Athletic.

The 20-year-old has been converted into a striker this season by manager Nathan Jones and has featured in all six of their matches, starting five of them.

Campbell was a regular at the club’s Sparrows Lane training ground in the summer, such was his determination to make an impact this season.

“I was in the gym a lot with my brother,” said the South London-born player. “They were hard sessions and difficult sessions.

“Towards the end of last season I wasn’t playing much – so I wanted to give myself the best chance (in terms of extra days at Sparrows Lane) going into the new season to become a key player and have an impact. I needed to get stronger physically.”

Campbell scored four goals in 40 appearances last season.

His target is to better that this time around as he adapts to playing in a front two.

“I’ve enjoyed learning along the way and I’m developing well,” said Campbell, when asked about his change. “Most of the time (when he was younger) I was out wide or number 10 – rarely as a striker. You’re closer to goal and have more contact with defenders. There is more space as well.

“The manager has shown a lot of belief in me and helped me play with confidence on the pitch and be myself.”

Campbell was part of a triple second-half change in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Rotherham – with Allan Campbell and Chuks Aneke also coming on straight after Liam Kelly had lashed the visitors ahead at The Valley.

Campbell won the ball on the edge of the box for Aneke’s excellent equaliser, his namesake and new addition on loan from Luton Town supplying the pass for the 25-yard strike.

“As the second half went on the game opened up more,” said Campbell. “When me and Chuks came on there was a lot of space and we were able to make an impact.

“I was happy to make an impact. That’s what the gaffer told me to do and I’m glad I did that.

“He told us to bring energy, have an impact and try to win the game. Unfortunately we didn’t but it was good to get a goal back.

“There were a lot of interruptions in the game, so it was hard to get a rhythm. When the ball was in play we did well and created chances.

“It’s been a good start to the season, only losing one game, we need that to continue. Promotion is the aim.”
