Nathan Jones pleased as Charlton take three points despite being below their best at Shrewsbury

Charlton boss Nathan Jones was relieved his side were able to take all three points at Shrewsbury despite not being at their best.

Gassan Ahadme’s goal, his first for the club, shortly after the interval settled the contest as the Addicks made it four wins out of six at the start of the League One campaign.

They also banked their fourth clean sheet of the campaign and rise to second in the fledgling league table after an untidy encounter at the Croud Meadow.

Shrewsbury, who’ve now lost five of their first six, game a good account of themselves but were unable to find a breakthrough.

Jones said: “We’ve got to make sure when we don’t play well that we do get things from the game, To win a game away from home, that shows. 13 points after six games, you’d have taken that all day long.

“A really difficult game, a real difficult test. We haven’t played well today but we’ve won the game and that’s the important thing.

“It’s a tough game. Conditions are difficult. Even though it looked like a beautiful, sunny day in Shropshire, it’s actually not. The wind was swirling, it was very difficult first-half. We started the game well but then allowed them to come into it too much. We didn’t impose our game on them. That’s the disappointment.

“I came in at half-time ready to have some choice words, but they said: ‘Look, the conditions are difficult. Just give us the benefit of the doubt.’ So, we did and we came out second-half much better, much more front-footed.

“We penned them in, got the goal which was important because we did the same against Reading without getting the goal. It’s a hard-fought game. They had one good chance where the keeper pulled off a big save that we’re really pleased with. But apart from that it’s a really even game that we just shaded. When you don’t play well, when you play like that you’ve got to win and we did. That’s the positive.”
