‘Like we expected’ – Crystal Palace boss delivers verdict on EFL Cup win over QPR

Oliver Glasner was pleased Crystal Palace dealt with an “aggressive” QPR side to win 2-1 in their EFL Cup third-round clash on Tuesday evening.

The Eagles took the lead in the 16th minute with Eddie Nketiah scoring his first goal since making his £30million deadline day switch from Arsenal.

Nketiah made a smart run to collect an Eberechi Eze free-kick inside the box and drill an effort through the legs of Joe Walsh from a tight angle.

QPR equalised seven minutes into the second half when the ball fell to Sam Field from a corner and the former West Brom midfielder thumped a volley beyond the England stopper.

Glasner’s side went back ahead in the 64th minute when Eze took aim from the edge of the box and his effort deflected off Steve Cook, flying past Walsh, who had already dived to make the save for the original effort.

The South Londoners saw out the game and have reached the last 16 for the first time since the 2018-2019 season.

“We are very pleased to win here,” said Glasner.

“It was like we expected – a very aggressive QPR side.

“We controlled the game for a long time. We scored a nice goal in the first half and had two or three more chances that we missed – one they cleared.

“We didn’t give them anything in the first half. I have played many cup games and if you don’t decide the game early enough, they always have a chance to come back.

“The crowd was loud after the equaliser and they got their confidence back.

“It was a very good reaction to get the second goal.

“It’s a very crucial part of football to defend with a lot of passion and desire.

“I’m pleased.”
