QPR confirm new deals for boss Cifuentes and assistant Calm – with ex-Celtic winger’s loan deal made permanent

Head coach Marti Cifuentes has signed a new long-term contract at QPR.

Spaniard Cifuentes joined from Swedish side Hammarby in October 2023 following Gareth Ainsworth’s sacking.

The 42-year-old was appointed with the west Londoners in the relegation zone but they picked up 48 points in 32 games under Cifuentes to finish 18th in the Championship.

Cifuentes’ assistant Xavi Calm has also signed a long-term deal with the Loftus Road-based side.

The length of the deals for the management duo have not been disclosed.

“We’re very happy,” said Cifuentes. “We’re enjoying the process and we remain aware of the club’s potential.

“Since we’ve been here, the supporters have been incredible. They have been very supportive – as has [chief executive] Christian [Nourry]. All in all, this was a very clear decision for us.

“From day one, it has felt like the right place for us but we are aware that there is still a lot of work to do.”

QPR also announced that Karamoko Dembele has had his loan deal from Brest turned into a permanent switch just two months after joining.

The 21-year-old ex-Celtic youngster has featured in every game since joining, picking up three assists so far.

He told the club website: “I’ve always wanted stability in my career, and this gives me that.

“I’m really happy to be here permanently and I’ve also enjoyed playing at Loftus Road – the atmosphere is incredible when there’s a big game.

“I’m pleased with the impact I’ve been able to make so far. My goal is to help the team as much as I can – I always want more but I’m pleased with the start I’ve made.

“I’m confident there is more to come, from both me and the team.”

Jake Clarke-Salter has also penned a new long-term deal.

The 27-year-old Carshalton-born centre-back has made 54 appearances since joining permanently from Chelsea in June 2022. He was voted the Players’ Player of the Season last term and had been linked with a host of Premier League clubs.

“I’m really happy,” Clarke-Salter told QPR’s website. “I’m really excited for the future, too.

“Hopefully we can continue to build on the good work that’s taken place since Martí came in last season.”
