‘If you’re going to choose a way’ – Chelsea boss makes admission over Liverpool defeat

Enzo Maresca was pleased with his Chelsea side’s performance despite their 2-1 defeat at Liverpool on Sunday.

A first-half penalty from Mohamed Salah gave the Reds the lead in the 29th minute after Levi Colwill brought down Curtis Jones inside the area.

Nicolas Jackson levelled the game at the start of the second half when Moises Caicedo played the striker through and behind the Liverpool defence.

Ex-Blues winger Salah then turned provider for Jones in the 50th minute, with the England midfielder collecting a pass at the back post and poking an effort beyond Robert Sanchez.

The west Londoners had more shots and possession at Anfield but suffered their first defeat in their last seven outings.

“It’s a shame,” Maresca told the BBC.

“We don’t like to lose games or drop points.

“But if you’re going to choose a way to lose, it’s this way.

“The team came here and tried to dominate – we played most of the game in their half.

“The performance was fantastic. I have come here many times and I know how difficult it is.

“The way we managed the situation was fantastic. It’s been a shame, but it’s the right direction.”
