Charlton Athletic trigger Miles Leaburn contract extension – and remain in talks over a longer-term agreement
Charlton Athletic have triggered a 12-month extension on Miles Leaburn’s contract – with manager Nathan Jones revealing they are also in the process of trying to negotiate a longer-term stay.
The 20-year-old striker, who headed home two goals in Tuesday’s 3-0 EFL Trophy win over Chelsea, had been due to be out of contract at the end of the current campaign.
Now Leaburn’s deal runs until the summer of 2026.
The former Chelsea youngster returned to first-team action at the start of October after a lengthy spell on the sidelines following hamstring surgery.
Prior to that injury setback he had been attracting Premier League interest, with Brentford one of the clubs who had been scouting the big frontman.
“We are endeavouring to offer Miles a longer contract,” Jones told the South London Press. “What we have done is just taken that up to give us some breathing space. But we have offered Miles a new contract.
“We want him to be here long, long-term. Miles has just come back from an injury, so we wanted to do it early to give him a little bit of clarification about what we think of him and how important we see him.
“We have to be very careful with him, to bring him back at the right time and right length of minutes so he can keep moving forward. Then you have got to remember he has only just turned 20, he has a lot of learning to do. You could see that with the goals he scored in midweek, those are the things we’re working with him for.
“We want him to be here for a long time and we want to work with him. We want to make him better and develop him, not only for us but for also for Miles.”
