Shopping centre could get a rooftop meadow, new music venue and 1,700 homes, under new plans
Lewisham shopping centre could get a rooftop meadow, new music venue and 1,700 new homes, according to new plans submitted to the council.
LandsecU+I, the regeneration arm of property investment company Landsec, has submitted a planning application to Lewisham council for its 17-acre revamp of the borough’s main shopping destination.
It is expected that the local authority’s Strategic Planning Committee will decide on the proposals next year.
Plans include a revamped shopping centre with a rooftop park, a new music venue, 1,700 homes – 20 per cent of which will be ‘affordable’ – and wider town centre improvements.
Final designs have been shaped in consultation with residents in the area who have visited the No.25 consultation space inside Lewisham Shopping Centre over the past three years to discuss the proposals.
Jon Watson, development director for LandsecU+I, said: “This is a once in a generation opportunity to improve the lives of millions of people who live in and around Lewisham town centre and across the wider borough.
“Right from the start of our journey to rethink the centre we heard loud and clear from thousands of people what mattered most to them.
“A massive thank you if you came and helped us to get to this point. I hope those who like the sound of what we’re proposing will support us today.”
The planning application follows a demolition works application which was submitted last month to bring forward an early phase of transformation next year with a new street food market and civic square on the site of the old market.
