Non-league round-up: Cray Valley’s derby win moves them third in Isthmian League Premier
Cray Valley PM moved up to third in the Isthmian League Premier Division after a 2-1 win over local rivals Cray Wanderers on Tuesday night.
Lateef Adaja gave the Wands the lead after one minute but two second-half goals – Sonny Black, right, and Tom Beere netting – handed Steve McKimm’s side all three points.
The Millers, promoted from the Isthmian South East Division as champions, are five points behind table-toppers Dover.
Cray Valley assistant manager Barry Moore said: “It wasn’t the prettiest of games at times – especially in the second half – but to come back from conceding after 19 seconds, we’re over the moon with three points.
“They were looking to hit us on the counter, which they’re very good at doing – they did it a couple of times in the first half.
“We stuck at it. It was important to get three points. It’s a local derby and there was a decent crowd here. Over the course of the 90 minutes, we deserved to win.”
Cray Wanderers stay in the bottom four relegation zone on goal difference. They head to Folkestone Invicta tomorrow.
Cray Valley host 10th–placed Horsham tomorrow.
Welling United suffered a 4-1 defeat at National League South leaders Eastbourne Borough on Tuesday evening. Anointed Chukwa put the Wings ahead inside the opening minute at Priory Lane.
But a double from former Millwall youngster George Alexander killed off the game after an own goal from Welling’s Jordan Gillmore and a strike from Eastbourne midfielder Michael Klass.
Rod Stringer’s Wings are four points clear of the bottom four.
“I was over the moon with the start,” Stringer told Welling’s YouTube channel.
“We were very good in the first half and we could have had two or three goals in the first half.
“But I’ve got to be honest, the goalkeeper (Gillmore) has conceded eight goals in two games. He’s killed us.
“I don’t want to knock Jordan too much, he’s come in and done us a big favour, but it shows the levels. If you’re not going to defend your box properly and you have a goalkeeper that’s vulnerable, you’re going to concede.”
Dulwich Hamlet missed the chance to climb into the Isthmian League Premier Division top five after a 3-0 defeat against Hendon.
The Champion-Hill-based side are two points adrift of the play-off zone after a fifth reverse in 13 league matches.
Dulwich host Potters Bar Town tomorrow.
