Charlton eyeing loan deal for Middlesbrough attacking midfielder

Charlton Athletic are eyeing a late loan swoop to sign Middlesbrough attacking midfielder Alex Gilbert, the South London Press understands.

The 23-year-old, who has seven appearances in the Championship to his name this season, is allowed to leave the Teessiders with the window closing tomorrow night at 11pm.

Nathan Jones’ side are in the market for an advanced midfielder after Allan Campbell was recalled by Luton and sold to Dundee in Scotland.

Boro wanted to sort incoming deals before they sanctioned some outgoing deals – including Anfernee Dijksteel, who has emerged as a loan target for Millwall.

Gilbert has been capped by the Republic of Ireland at U21 and U19 level.

The Birmingham-born player started on the books of West Brom before making the switch to Brentford. Gilbert signed for Boro in the summer of 2023 with compensation believed to be in the region of £1million.

Gilbert has had one previous loan – at Swindon Town.
