Council launches consultation over sale of Woolwich Barracks site

Following nearly 250 years of use as a military base, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has decided to sell Woolwich Barracks.

The MoD is modernising its defence estate to ensure it is better structured and more economical.

The army will maintain a presence in Woolwich, with the King’s Troops remaining on site at Napier Lines, but parts of the site will become available for new uses in 2028.

In response to the plans, Greenwich council has launched a consultation for residents to have their say on how the site will be developed after the sale.

Residents, businesses, community groups and other stakeholders can provide feedback early in the process.

Cllr Anthony Okereke, leader of Greenwich council, said: “Greenwich has a unique military history that we are rightly proud of.

“While we would prefer for Woolwich Barracks to remain as a military barracks, we understand that a decision has been made by the MoD to sell the site.

“We therefore want to make sure that any future development is done in a way that preserves the things that make our borough so special, and respects the role that heritage sites like Woolwich Barracks hold in creating a sense of place for our communities.

“It’s important to use land in the right way, so residents and businesses can flourish. We encourage people and organisations to help shape the future of this site.”

The consultation sets out the key issues, constraints and opportunities that will need to be considered when bringing forward proposals for redevelopment of the Woolwich Barracks site and will close on March 17.
