Charlton Athletic squad set for Wembley visit

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Charlton Athletic’s squad will visit Wembley before the end of this week – as they attempt to get used to their surroundings before Sunday’s League One play-off final against Sunderland.

The Addicks’ last visit to the national stadium was in the 1998 Division One final, when they also faced the Black Cats.

Since then Wembley has been rebuilt.

Some of Charlton’s squad have experience of playing there – Lyle Taylor won promotion with AFC Wimbledon to League One. Jonny Williams was part of the Crystal Palace squad which beat Watford to go up into the Premier League.

Bowyer, speaking on Monday, said: “Apparently we’re allowed to go and look around the place either Thursday or Friday.

“We’ll head up there and have a look, I think it’s best to do that.

“Some might get overwhelmed with the place. So we’ll go before and they can all take pictures and what they want to do, so when they turn up Sunday it is not all new to them.”

Charlton will have an overnight stay in a hotel before the match.

“We’ll go the night before becaus the traffic on these days is horrendous,” said Bowyer. “Leaving from the training ground would take too long. We’ll stay close by.”
