Portsmouth target would not be allowed to leave Charlton on a free

Portsmouth are interested in Jason Pearce – but Charlton Athletic owner Roland Duchatelet would demand a fee for the experienced centre-back.

The 31-year-old defender is out of contract next summer.

And with the Addicks working with a low budget for the 2019-20 Championship campaign, the question is whether they can match the terms that Pearce wants.

Sunderland and Oxford United have also been linked with Pearce.

He started his career on the books of Pompey as a kid and returned to Fratton Park as a pro in the 2011-12 season – sold by Bournemouth – before then Leeds boss Neil Warnock snapped him up.

Pearce has played 81 games for Charlton but was kept out of the side by Naby Sarr at the end of last season.

He started all three play-off matches on the bench but came on in the Wembley final win over Sunderland as well as the closing stages of the first leg of the semi-final at Doncaster.

Pearce started four of the last 10 games in the regulation season.
